Ice Cap

The Ice Cap is an advanced cooling helmet designed to prevent hair loss in patients undergoing chemotherapy. This innovative technology helps patients maintain their privacy during treatment and allows them to choose when and to whom they disclose their battle with illness. The helmet features an ergonomic design, is portable, comfortable, user-friendly for both patients and caregivers, and is approved by the FDA as well as the Israeli Ministry of Health.

Hair loss is one of the most distressing side effects experienced by cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Although temporary, hair loss represents a significant emotional challenge, often leading some patients to consider discontinuing treatment to avoid this visible side effect. The Ice Cap offers meaningful relief by preserving patients' familiar appearance and helping to alleviate the psychological and social burden caused by chemotherapy-induced alopecia.

The helmet employs an advanced, gradual cooling technology that prevents the discomfort of brain freeze. It consists of two personalized layers worn during chemotherapy sessions, which cool the hair follicles on the scalp. This cooling causes the constriction of blood vessels and slows down the metabolic rate of cells, reducing the chemotherapy drugs' impact on hair follicles and effectively preventing hair loss.

A computerized system controls and regulates the flow of cooling liquid through the cap throughout the treatment. For optimal results, patients wear the cap approximately 30 minutes before the chemotherapy begins, throughout the treatment, and up to two hours after its completion, depending on the specific medication used. The ergonomic design allows patients to move freely and comfortably during treatment without being confined to the treatment chair.

To date, most chemotherapy side effects have been addressed except for hair loss. The Ice Cap represents a significant breakthrough in supportive care, and at Galilee Medical Center, we aim to equip ourselves with this technology to offer our patients this valuable option, thereby easing their health journey.
